Chemical Peels

Reveal brighter, smoother, more radiant skin with medical-grade peels.

What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are one of the most clinically proven skin resurfacing treatments available — and at Define You Med Spa, we use the VI Peel, a physician-formulated medium-depth peel that has set the standard for safe, effective chemical exfoliation across all skin types and tones.

The VI Peel line includes several targeted formulations to address specific concerns. The VI Peel Original addresses fine lines and sun damage. VI Peel Precision Plus targets stubborn hyperpigmentation and melasma. VI Peel Body tackles texture and pigmentation on the body. VI Peel Purify is formulated for acne-prone skin to reduce breakouts, comedones, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What makes VI Peels stand apart from over-the-counter products is the depth and combination of active ingredients — including TCA (trichloroacetic acid), retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and vitamin C — that work synergistically to penetrate the outer layers of the skin and stimulate cellular turnover, collagen synthesis, and pigment suppression.

Chemical peels are appropriate for virtually any adult skin type and tone. Our providers perform a thorough skin assessment before recommending the most appropriate VI Peel formulation for your specific skin concerns and history. Darker skin tones are particularly well-served by the VI Peel, which is specifically engineered to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What to Expect

Skin Assessment

Your provider evaluates your skin type, Fitzpatrick tone, active concerns, and skincare history to select the most appropriate VI Peel formulation and determine if any pre-treatment preparation — such as a retinoid protocol — is recommended.

Peel Application

The skin is thoroughly cleansed and degreased. The VI Peel solution is applied in careful, even passes across the treatment area. You may notice a warming or tingling sensation during application — this is completely normal and typically lasts only a few minutes.

Post-Care Instructions

You leave the office with the peel on the skin and receive detailed aftercare instructions. The peel is washed off at home 4 to 6 hours after your appointment. A take-home post-care kit with everything you need is included with your treatment.

Peeling Phase

Over the following 3 to 5 days, the outer layers of skin will peel and flake — this is the expected healing process and signals the peel is working. It is important not to pick or forcefully remove peeling skin. By day 5 to 7, peeling resolves and your new, radiant skin is revealed.

Results & Recovery

Chemical peels deliver visible results relatively quickly compared to many other treatments. Within one week of your peel, as the peeling phase concludes, your skin will appear noticeably brighter, smoother, and more even in tone. Fine lines look softened, pores appear smaller, and any pigmentation you were targeting shows clear improvement.

Optimal results from a single peel are typically assessed at 2 to 4 weeks following treatment, allowing time for continued cellular turnover and collagen remodeling. Many clients benefit from a series of 3 to 4 peels spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for deeper concerns like melasma, acne scarring, or significant photo damage.

Sun protection is non-negotiable in the weeks following a peel. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is essential to protect newly renewed skin and prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from developing.

Frequently Asked Questions

VI Peels are advanced medical-grade chemical peels designed to improve skin texture and tone by targeting acne, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and aging. They contain a synergistic blend of active ingredients including TCA, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and vitamin C. VI Peels are specifically formulated to be safe and effective for all skin types and tones, including darker Fitzpatrick skin types.
The in-office appointment takes approximately 30–45 minutes, including cleansing, peel application, and a thorough review of your aftercare instructions. You leave with the peel on and wash it off at home 4 to 6 hours later.
Some redness and mild tightness are common in the first 24 hours. Visible peeling and flaking typically begins around day 2 or 3 and continues through day 5. By the end of the first week, peeling resolves and skin looks noticeably brighter and smoother. A take-home aftercare kit is included with your treatment to support you through recovery.
Most clients notice improved skin tone and texture, reduced appearance of fine lines, diminished pigmentation and acne marks, and an overall more youthful, radiant complexion following their first peel. Results are typically most dramatic and transformative with a series of 3–4 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart for deeper or more persistent concerns.
Temporary redness, mild swelling, and peeling are expected and are part of the intended treatment process — they resolve within 3 to 5 days. More serious complications such as persistent redness, scarring, or prolonged hyperpigmentation are rare when the peel is applied correctly and aftercare instructions are followed. Sun protection immediately following treatment is essential to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
